Labour’s budget proposals for the coming year will mean an additional £2.75 million will be spent improving the borough’s roads, it’s been revealed.

Following the government’s announcement of the Final Settlement of local government funding on 9 February, further details have been confirmed about the cash available to maintain the borough’s roads.

This includes over £2 million as Rotherham’s share of funding from South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, as well as £729,000 additional Council funding, made possible by the improved national funding settlement from the Labour government.

It represents nearly a 30% increase on the roads funding available to the Council prior to these announcements.

Funding will be used to maintain and repair highways across Rotherham, including repairing more potholes and road surfaces, leading to safer roads and better journeys for all road users.

This brings the total spend for road maintenance, road repair and highway structure repairs for the Council to over £12 million.

Rotherham Council’s Leader, Cllr Chris Read, said: “We’ve all seen how the recent wet weather has caused havoc with roads not just in Rotherham, but right across the country so it’s great to be able to direct this additional funding to support more road resurfacing over the coming year.

“Earlier this year, the Government said Rotherham’s road maintenance approach was one of the best in the country, but we’re well aware that there is still plenty more to be done. We welcome the improved level of government funding and we’re determined to put it to good use.”

The proposals will be voted on by all councillors as part of the budget setting process this Wednesday (4th March).
